AMP Open House and Track Safety Clinic

by Adam Tharp

Want to learn how to drive on the track?

At this event, we will discuss how track driving differs from driving on streets, and the best way to become a better driver is to learn from those who have experience. The goal is simple, we want you to be comfortable driving your car on the track. This clinic is designed to help alleviate those concerns, or anxiety, about participating in track and autocross events.

At driving school, a safe environment is created through the interaction of briefings. In these briefings we discuss conditions, track rules, and the use of flags to communicate with drivers. Throughout the day, you will begin to learn the art of maintaining control of your car when it has exceeded its threshold of grip, either by design or driver error. This requires an understanding of how your tires grip the pavement, how weight transfers through turns, and how braking and acceleration affects your grip throughout the corners.

We will also show you the various nuances of being out at the track, including how cars are permitted to enter and exit the track, how drivers are expected to treat other track users to ensure a safe and fun time, the lingo used, what each flag color means, run classes, how to prep, and so much more. The day will be filled with lots of information, some good food, and great company!

Lastly, you will have a rare opportunity to be a passenger in a ride-along, with an experienced driver that will show how everything comes together and how some of these issues apply to actual track conditions. These laps will be done at reduced speeds to help the students better absorb the information.

So, what are you waiting for? Sign up, below, today! The event is free and lunch is included!

*** PLEASE NOTE THE VENUE AND DATE CHANGE ***

Come meet us at Arizona Motorsports Park for a day of fun and give your BMW some proper exercise!

This track is fun for experienced performance drivers as well as those just wanting to learn how their BMW performs. All car marques are welcome as invited AZ PCA guests.

Lunch will be served at the track. Please bring a chair, water and sunscreen. All DE events run rain or shine.

If you haven’t experienced a track day before, you are really missing out! This is a safe, controlled, environment where you can learn how properly drive your BMW at high speeds. Some of the things that we will be teaching include car control, when to brake, turn, etc and how to handle the grin that comes from driving your BMW the way it was meant to be driven!

— You must sign up HERE and also RSVP below to confirm that a spot will be reserved for you. —

If this is your first visit to the track, then please sign-up for HPDE 1.

If you have been to the track before, then go ahead and sign-up for HPDE 2.

* An instructor is automatically provided for HPDE 1. If you would like an instructor for HPDE 2 then make sure you check the box to request an instructor.

NOTE: If you have, or are considering owning, your own helmet then please be aware that Snell 2005 helmets are no longer able to be used for these events. You must replace it with a Snell 2010 or Snell 2015 helmet. If you are considering purchasing a helmet, then we recommend going straight to a Snell 2015 since they are legal for an additional 5 years past the Snell 2010’s and there is not much of a price difference. The Porsche club also has loaner helmets available on a first-come first-served basis, at the track.
